The Cannery in SF

The Cannery is a significant part of the history of San Francisco. The building is located at Fisherman’s Wharf, roughly blocks away from Pier 39.

History of The Cannery

The historic building was originally built in 1907 to house a fruit and vegetable canning factory. At that time, it was the biggest canning factory in the United States. In 1937, this building stopped production and became a warehouse for several companies. In 1963, Leonard Martin bought this business in a bid to save the landmark site. As a result, Mr. Martin rebuilt it to become a center of commerce as it is known today.

About this building

The Cannery is a three-leveled, walled complex, divided into 2 sections by a corridor. Although this structure is rather a small building, it contains quite a number of stores, shops, and restaurants. This business is always vibrant and buzzing with lots of activities going on within the building.

The structure can be easily misunderstood from the outside to be just another old structure; but within the Cannery, there is an escalator, open arcade, and an outside elevator.

The courtyard of the Cannery is a space within the building where you can find trees that are well over 130 years! You can grab a lunch within the courtyard and if you’re lucky, you might see a live music show or a performance going on while you are there.

Shop and Relax

At this business, you can also shop for unique items from the merchants within the building. You can create your own teddy bear from scratch at the Brown Bear Teddy Bear Shop. There’s also a Handmade Ceramic Studio where you can create your own artwork. Music stores are inside the building, where you can find a wide collection of good music.

This spot is just the place where you can easily relax and have fun for a few hours of your day. Bring the kids along too, for some great family fun.
