History of Visitacion Valley, San Francisco

Short History of Visitacion Valley

Viz Valley, or what is known as Visitacion Valley is populated by working-class residents, and the area's wages and rents are significantly lower than those of other areas. The area was once settled by Spaniard Americans, Italians, and Irish immigrants who worked in nearby factories.. Later, during World War II, a large arrival of African Americans who had previously worked in shipyards arrived. However, because of the high cost of living, the African American population has been decreasing in recent years. Furthermore, Chinese immigrants, who make up more than half of the neighborhood's entire population, are displacing African Americans.

The former army barracks were transformed into a housing project known as Sunnydale Projects. The housing project is one of the biggest in Visitacion and is known to be one of the most violent areas in the neighborhood.

The Geneva towers which were built in the 1960s suffered dilapidation and negligence and became a hotbed of crime and drug activities. The towers were later owned by the government in the 1970s. The buildings were later demolished in 1998 and replaced by low-density buildings.

The government conducted a crackdown on cocaine and the crime rate has subsidized and this has allowed businesses to grow although most of the problems are not solved.

Location

Mclaren Park and Gleneagles Golf Course characterize the neighborhood to the west. It is bordered to the north by Mansell Blvd and Portola. To the east, Bayview Hill and Candlestick Cove, and to the south, the San Mateo line.
